The Brood (1979)
The Brood is one of David Cronenberg’s earliest movies. You can nevertheless still see some of his early distinctive trademarks: lots of body horror and the alienation of the main character for instance. It’s combined with some of his newer trademarks, like the big psychology aspect. It makes for an interesting combination which works out pretty well.
The way the story gets told (by use of conversations between a psychiatrist and his client) is original. It’s the same trick Cronenberg used many years later for A Dangerous Method (2011). It’s about a man whose crazy wife gets institutionalized, when at the same time a brood of scary little children haunts the neighborhood. Pretty cool, but the elaboration is quite dry and shallow, partly due to the precarious acting.
This is definitely not David Cronenberg’s best movie, but it is entertaining enough, especially for the fans.
